Severe Weather

In the case of severe weather, we will aim to stay open whenever possible.  Our aim is to stay open if it is safe for pupils and staff to travel to and from school.  However, we only have a few teaching staff who live locally and if we are not able to staff the school at a safe level, we would make the decision to close.

Severe Weather before School

In the event of bad weather before school, this is the procedure that we will follow:

  • Mrs Dumolo and Mrs Robinson will discuss the situation;
  •  the school will liaise with Debenham High School, but we may stay open if the High School is closed as they are affected by a large number of pupils travelling by bus;
  • we would aim to make a decision whether or not to close by 7.00am at the latest;
  • parents would be informed by an In-app message on Arbor if the School was closed. In-app messages would not be sent if school was opening as usual;
  • we will inform Suffolk County Council of any decision to close. They will update the School Closures’ website and inform the local radio stations on our behalf.  Details for which can be found below:
    • SCC School Closures;
    • BBC Radio Suffolk: FM103.9 (Ipswich), FM104.6 (west Suffolk), FM95.5 (Lowestoft), FM 95.9 (Aldeburgh); and
    • Heart Suffolk: 1 and FM96.4.

Please be aware that the SCC School Closures website can take a while to be updated.

If children come to school in the snow, please bring them in wellies with a pair of clean dry shoes and a spare pair of warm socks, to wear in school. If children play in the snow at playtimes, they often get wet feet.

Severe Weather during the School Day

If we decide during the school day that the weather is worsening and we need to close, you will be informed by In-App message. [It is important that the Office always has your up-to-date mobile number.]

Please do not come into school to collect your child early unless we have informed you that the school is closing, as this causes severe disruption to pupils and staff.

Please only phone the school if you live in a very inaccessible location and are anxious about your journey. It is important that the telephone lines are kept free for use.

If we do decide to close during the day, we will suggest a time by which we would like the children to be collected. We understand that it is difficult to make arrangements to collect children in the middle of the day and we will be flexible and patient.
